Sometimes You Just Need to Make Something: Creative Workshops in Norfolk
Creative workshops in Norfolk offer something that can be surprisingly difficult to find in busy everyday life: time to slow down, use your hands and become completely absorbed in making something.
When life feels over busy or overwhelming, I find myself automatically reaching for something to do with my hands.
It might be chopping endless vegetables for chutney, kneading bread, picking up a paintbrush or simply sitting down with a pen and doodling.
There is something about making that quietens everything else for a while.
Your hands are occupied. Your mind has something tangible to concentrate on. And, for an hour or two, you are not thinking about the enormous list of things you ought to be doing.
You are simply making.
We do not have to be "good" at workshops!
This is something I come back to again and again at Reef Make & Do.
So many people walk through the door and tell me, "I am not very arty." But being creative is not reserved for people who can already paint beautifully, sew a perfect seam or produce something worthy of framing.
Sometimes the value is simply in the doing.
Choosing colours. Making marks. Getting your hands messy. Trying something unfamiliar. Discovering what happens when you stop worrying about the finished result and allow yourself to play.
It can give you a bit of a lift on an ordinary week. It can provide breathing space when life feels rather full. And sometimes it reminds you of a part of yourself that has been quietly pushed aside by everything else.
A little more creative play, please
That is one of the reasons I love workshops such as marbling and Playing with Paint.
Marbling has an element of magic about it. Colour moves and swirls in ways you cannot completely control, and every print reveals something slightly different.
Playing with Paint is exactly what its name suggests. It is an opportunity to put perfection to one side and explore paint, colour and mark making simply for the pleasure of seeing what happens.
There is no requirement to arrive feeling creative.
You just have to arrive.
