The little things that make making together so special Creative workshops Norfolk

Paint covered messy tablecloths evidencing years of messy workshops!

Creative workshops in Norfolk offer more than just learning a new skill. At Reef Make & Do, our art and craft workshops, courses and weekly classes create space for calm, connection and creativity, where even the smallest moments of making can bring a real sense of joy, confidence and belonging.

I found myself smiling this week at some of the little things that happen in my job. The sort of things that might look like a bit of a mess to anyone else, but to me feel like signs that something really wonderful has taken place.

A table covered in paint or ink at the end of a workshop. Not neatly, but properly used. Layers of colour, smudges where someone has been making big, bold marks with a brush or brayer. I always pause for a moment before clearing it all away.

Another messy table!

A sink full of washing up after lunch. Plates stacked, mugs everywhere, the last crumbs of cake left behind. I know most people would see this as a chore, but it is never just washing up. It is the end of a delicious shared lunch, great conversation, and people lingering a little longer than they need to.

The quiet hum in the room when everyone is settled into what they are doing. No one rushing. No one checking their phone. Just that gentle sense of people being completely absorbed in something for themselves.

And then the messages afterwards.

A short email to say thank you. Someone telling me how much they enjoyed the workshop or class, or that they felt a little more confident than they expected to. Those messages mean more than I can properly explain.

And of course, our Crafternoons.

These regular community gatherings have become something very special. A simple idea, but such a lovely one. People bringing along their own makings, sharing time and conversation, and quietly raising funds for a local charity. It is never really about what is made. It is about how it feels to be there, making together.

When I stop and look at it like this, I realise how many of these small moments there are. None of them are particularly grand, but together they add up to something that feels incredibly worthwhile.

That is what I see, week in and week out. Creativity is not about getting it perfect. It is about giving yourself time, space and permission to enjoy the process. To slow down, to try something new, and to feel part of something.

If you have been along to one of our workshops, you will know exactly what I mean. And if you have not yet, I hope this gives you a little glimpse of what it is like.

We have a full programme of art and craft workshops in Norfolk, along with courses and weekly classes, each one designed to give you a few hours to step away from everything else and enjoy making in good company.

There is now just one space left on Anne Hickley’s Marbling a Silk Scarf and Papers workshop on Friday 5th June, so if you have been thinking about it, now is the moment to book.

The wonderful basket maker Karen Bek is running a brand new workshop on Wednesday 13th May, where you will learn how to strip bark and use it alongside other plant materials to weave beautiful, functional containers.

Mary Blue is back with her next painting masterclass on Friday 29th May, this time inspired by the work of Fairfield Porter. Her last masterclass sold out, so do book in if this one has caught your eye.

And on Thursday 11th June, the lovely Nick Wellband returns to teach her silver clay workshop, creating delicate leaf pendants. This is a particularly good choice if you are new or feeling unsure, as no experience is needed at all.

Details of these 4 workshops are at the bottom of the blog.
