The Importance of Making When Times Are Tough

At Reef Make & Do in North Norfolk, we offer creative workshops and courses designed to bring people together through making. This week I wanted to share a few reflections on why creativity feels so vital during uncertain times, and how the simple act of making can lift the spirits.

Last month I shared some honest thoughts about adapting Reef Make & Do for the year ahead, and I was deeply moved by the many kind and thoughtful messages that came afterwards. What struck me most was how many people described making as a lifeline, a way to find calm and perspective when life feels unpredictable.
When the world feels heavy, sitting at a table with kind faces, cups of tea, and the quiet rhythm of creativity brings a stillness that is difficult to find anywhere else. The act of making slows the mind, steadies the breath, and gently lifts the spirit. You leave lighter.
It does not matter whether you are printing, weaving, folding, stitching, or shaping clay. It is the same quiet magic each time. Hands are busy, the mind is calm, and the heart feels open. It is community. It is purpose. It is joy.

So while these times remain uncertain and many of us are being careful with our spending, I hope you will still make time for making. It may be through a workshop, at home with a sketchbook and a cup of tea, or by mending something you love. It all counts.
Creative Inspiration to Try at Home
If you would like some small, mindful projects to enjoy at home, here are a few of my favourite Instagram accounts for inspiration. Do let me know if you try any of them.
Flourishing Fibers – beautiful stitched cards and simple textile ideas.
Small Ditch – creative projects made entirely from discarded materials.
Lark and Bower – wonderful miniature weaving projects.
The Sweet Stitches – delightful mini sewing ideas that can be completed in an afternoon.
Join Us to Make Together
For anyone local to North Norfolk, our workshops continue throughout the year, from block printing and willow weaving to origami, silver clay jewellery, and calligraphy. Each session offers a welcoming space to create, connect, and recharge.
Warmest wishes,
