More Than Just a Workshop

Why Creative Workshop Days Matter at Reef Make & Do

Creative workshops in Norfolk are often described by what you will make or learn. But at Reef Make & Do, they are about far more than finished pieces or new skills. They are about time, care, connection, and the quiet confidence that comes from giving yourself permission to slow down and create.

Let me tell you about one of the most memorable workshops I have ever been to.

It was a whole day of pottery, a whole day to myself, many years ago now, when the boys were all little and long before Reef Make & Do existed. I remember arriving feeling slightly nervous, wondering if I would be out of my depth and whether everyone else would somehow know what they were doing. I need not have worried.

My Wonky Pots!

There was space to arrive properly. The kettle was already on. Someone greeted me by name and showed me where to put my coat. The coffee was really good. There was time to sit, chat, and ease into the day before we even touched the clay. Nothing felt rushed, and nothing felt performative.

As the day unfolded, it just got better and better. There was the most delicious lasagne for lunch and later, when we stopped for tea and homemade lemon drizzle cake, I actually had a wobble. My eyes welled up. At the end of the day, the tutor quietly took me to one side and said, “It is quite a big deal giving oneself permission to have a day of your own. You handled it marvellously.”

It was then that I realised just how much thought had gone into all the little things. The rhythm of the session. Breaks at just the right moments. Chairs that were comfortable enough to linger in. The gentle encouragement from the tutor, who seemed to know exactly when to step in and when to leave us to it. There was conversation, laughter, quiet concentration, and a wonderful sense that everyone was allowed to be exactly where they were.

Over the years, I have watched those same moments unfold again and again around our tables. New faces arriving a little unsure. Familiar faces welcoming them in. Conversations starting easily. Shoulders dropping. People surprising themselves with what they can do when they are given time, encouragement, and kindness.

Of course, I went home with a pot. Slightly wobbly, full of character, and utterly precious to me. But what stayed with me far longer was how I felt by the end of the day. Calm. Restored. A little more myself than I had been when I arrived.

Without realising it at the time, that day shaped everything that came later.

When I began Reef Make & Do, I knew I wanted it to feel like that. Not just a place to learn a skill, but a place where the thinking has been done for you. Where you can arrive as you are. Where there is time for tea, proper homemade cake, conversation if you want it, quiet if you need it, and space to make without pressure. Where, if you have a wobble, there will be tissues and reassurance, and often others quietly sharing their own wobble moments too.

That is why it is never just about the workshop.

If you are new here, or if you have been quietly wondering whether now might be the right time to try something new, please know that you do not need experience or confidence. You do not need to be “arty”. Curiosity is enough. Everything else tends to follow.
