PATRICIA MULLIN
Writer
‘My concerns in writing are perception (often flawed) and moral ambiguity, with ideas sourced and inspired through art, objects, nature, the half–remembered or the unwittingly disclosed. The starting point for my short fiction is invariably visual, juxtaposing the known past with an unsettling, unconscious incongruity.’
I originally trained as a textile designer, completing my Foundation at Colchester School of Art before graduating from Central Saint Martins with a BA (Hons) in Applied Textiles. As a studio designer for Liberty & Co, I created designs for Tana Lawn and Veruna wool ranges and later worked as a freelance designer whose work sold in the UK and internationally. Alongside my visual practice, I trained as an art specialist teacher at Goldsmiths College and I have taught in many educational establishments and unconventional settings.
After moving to Norfolk, I became increasingly drawn to writing as my primary creative form. I completed an MA in Writing the Visual at Norwich University of the Arts, a programme that explores the relationship between critical and creative writing and visual culture.
I am a published author and a member of the Society of Authors. I write across forms including novels and short stories to flash fiction, memoir and collaborative, site‑specific work. More recently, I have returned to my art practice, allowing visual making and storytelling to intersect. I think of this as “collaborating with myself.”
Teaching and collaboration are central to my work. I lead site‑specific writing workshops in galleries, museums, historic buildings, and informal creative spaces. I ran the first writing course to take place in an English cathedral (Norwich Cathedral) and have taught in contexts ranging from university collections to yarn shops. These shared, hands‑on encounters—working with objects, environments, and especially people, open up new ways of telling stories, for me and my students.
