Towering Totems
Thursday 6th August 10am-4pm
Service Description
Towering Totems How tall can your sculpture grow? In this imaginative sculpture workshop, children will design, build and decorate their own colourful totem inspired sculptures using a variety of shapes, forms and patterns. We will begin by creating smaller hanging totems using decorated cardboard tubes, exploring pattern, colour and repetition while learning how artists use symbols and shapes to tell stories. Children will design their own decorative motifs before stacking and assembling their hanging sculptures. Next, we will move on to our main project: a large freestanding totem sculpture. Using pool noodles, spheres, cylinders and wooden blocks, children will plan their design, choose a colour palette and present their ideas before construction begins. Working from a wooden base, they will build their sculptures by stacking and combining shapes to create unique structures full of character and personality. We will explore pattern, balance, rhythm and repetition before bringing each sculpture to life with paint and decorative details. This workshop is perfect for children who enjoy building, designing, painting and working in three dimensions. No previous experience is needed and all materials are provided. Please bring a packed lunch, a named water bottle and two small snacks. To help keep energy levels steady, we ask that snacks do not include chocolate, sweets or fizzy drinks. Children should wear clothes suitable for art activities as this workshop may be gloriously messy.
