Steam Art Lab
Thursday 29th October 10am-4pm
Service Description
STEAM Art Lab What happens when art, science, maths and engineering collide? In this hands on Art Club day, we will experiment, investigate, design and build as we discover some of the fascinating connections between art and science. We will begin with optical illusions and explore how artists can trick our eyes into seeing movement, depth and three dimensional forms on a completely flat piece of paper. Children will experiment with spirals, repeating patterns, warped lines and bold Op Art designs before creating their own 3D hand drawings and larger optical artworks using line, pattern and colour. After lunch, we will move from creating the illusion of three dimensions to actually building something that moves. We will investigate how our own hands work, looking at fingers, joints and the way tendons help us move. Then it is time for our big engineering challenge: designing and constructing a working robotic arm and hand from cardboard, straws and string. Children will experiment with the mechanism, problem solve and make adjustments until pulling the strings makes their robotic fingers bend and move. Once the engineering works, they can transform their creation with paint, collage, pattern and their own completely individual design. A brilliant day for curious young makers who enjoy drawing, designing, experimenting, building and figuring out how things work. Suitable for ages 8 to 12. No experience needed. All materials provided. Please bring a well stocked packed lunch, a named water bottle and several small snacks. Children should wear old clothes suitable for creative activities.
