Service Description

Portraits with Personality How many different ways can you create a self portrait? In this exciting mixed media workshop, children will explore portraiture through a series of creative activities inspired by some of the world's most inventive artists. Rather than trying to create a perfect likeness, we will experiment with colour, shape, collage and design to discover how artists express personality, interests and individuality through their work. We will begin by drawing silhouette portraits of one another before creating bold monochrome backgrounds filled with words, symbols, patterns and images that reflect our hobbies, interests and favourite things. Next, we will explore Cubist portraiture inspired by Pablo Picasso, using photographs, drawing and collage to create playful portraits that reflect personality rather than appearance. Newspaper, paint and bold geometric shapes will be used to transform ordinary photographs into imaginative works of art. Throughout the day, we will look at a range of artists' self portraits and discover how different artists choose to represent themselves. Children will then create a larger mixed media self portrait using paint, collage papers, paint pens and photographs. They may choose to mirror and complete part of their photograph, or take a more abstract approach using colour, pattern and collage. This workshop is perfect for children who enjoy drawing, painting, collage and creative experimentation. No previous experience is needed and all materials are provided. Please bring a packed lunch, a named water bottle and two small snacks. To help keep energy levels steady, we ask that snacks do not include chocolate, sweets or fizzy drinks. Children should wear clothes suitable for art activities.
