Faces & Forms What makes a face a face? How can a few simple lines, shapes and materials become something full of personality and expression? In this inventive and hands on Art Camp day, we will explore faces, features and sculpture through a series of exciting creative challenges using cardboard, wire and mixed media materials. We will begin by looking closely at facial features and how artists simplify faces into shapes and forms. Using recycled cardboard, children will design and build bold animal and character faces inspired by contemporary cardboard sculpture. Through cutting, layering, folding and construction techniques, they will transform ordinary cardboard into striking three dimensional creations full of texture and personality. Next, we will move from solid forms to line and space as we explore the fascinating world of wire sculpture. Looking at examples of wire artists and sculptors, children will create abstract wire portraits of one another, learning how a single continuous line can suggest facial features, expressions and character. We will experiment with shaping, twisting and joining wire to create elegant sculptural drawings in space. As confidence grows, children will have the opportunity to develop their own ideas further by creating a wire sculpture of their choice. This could be an animal, a face, a flower, an object or a completely original creation. Throughout the day we will focus on observation, experimentation, problem solving and creative thinking while discovering how artists use both shape and line to bring ideas to life. By the end of the workshop, every child will take home a collection of unique sculptural artworks that explore faces and forms in exciting and unexpected ways. Suitable for ages 8 to 12. No experience needed. All materials provided. Please bring a packed lunch, a named water bottle and two small snacks. Children should wear old clothes suitable for creative activities.
