Date: Thursday 30th November Time: 10am- 2pm Cost: £85 As always at Reef House, refreshments as well as delicious homemade cakes and lunch are included in your workshop day. Join us at Reef for another fabulous painting workshop with the lovely Mary Blue when we will be be focusing on cake! Let’s paint some cake, or candy confection in the style of Wayne Thiebaud, a California based artist painting in Post World War 2 America. We are going to explore his world and I invite you to think about deep blue shadows and bright luminous light. I often think of the many museum experiences I have had over the course of my life and what attracts us to a particular artist. Wayne is a particular favourite of mine. In the case of Wayne Thiebaud it is his confidence, his seductiveness, and his playfulness. He absorbs the Northern California light, heat, and agriculture of the American sensibilities in a 1940’s and 50’s world. This period in our history are marked by a post-World War 2 industrial boom, the dawn of the Cold War, and the Civil Rights movement in the United States. The civil rights movement and the crusade against communism at home and abroad exposed the underlying divisions in American society. I think this frame of mind permeates everything that Wayne paints. Nothing is ever as it seems. I’d like us to think about how the influences artists encounter shape the work they make. Wayne's childhood was filled with beach cafes, ice creams and rows of pies. And of course, Wayne believed in the magic of painting. I will do a painting demonstration and then we will work through exercises to create three small studies of cake.
